Questions about PR points
How many points do I need for permanent residency in Japan?
70 points let you apply for permanent residency after 3 years in Japan; 80 points shorten the wait to 1 year. 70 points is also the score that qualifies you for Highly Skilled Professional status itself.
Do I need the HSP visa to apply for permanent residency after 1 year?
No. The permanent residency guidelines also accept someone on another status of residence (Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, for example) who already had 80 points 1 year before the application date and has kept 80 points or more while living in Japan since then. The 3-year route works the same way with 70 points. The other conditions for permanent residency still apply: good conduct, enough income to live on, and taxes, pension and health insurance paid on time.
Does my degree or MBA count for HSP points?
Yes. On the Advanced Specialized / Technical path, a doctorate is worth 30 points, an MBA or MOT 25, a master's 20 and a bachelor's 10. On the Business Management path an MBA or MOT is also worth 25, while a doctorate counts 20, like a master's. On the Academic Research path an MBA or MOT counts 20, like a master's. A degree from a Japanese university adds 10 bonus points on every path.
What salary do I need to score points at my age?
On the Academic Research and Advanced Specialized / Technical paths, salary points depend on your age: they start at ¥4,000,000 a year under 30, at ¥5,000,000 from 30 to 34, at ¥6,000,000 from 35 to 39, and at ¥8,000,000 from 40. From ¥10,000,000 a year you get the maximum, 40 points, at any age. On the Advanced Specialized / Technical and Business Management paths, a salary below ¥3,000,000 a year rules you out whatever your total. Business Management has its own scale with no age condition, starting at ¥10,000,000.
Does Japanese ability (JLPT N1 or N2) count?
Yes, on every path. JLPT N1 is worth 15 points, and so is a degree majoring in Japanese from a university abroad; JLPT N2 is worth 10 points.
