- 2026-07-17 — Gion Matsuri : Kyoto’s month-long July festival; the huge Yamaboko float processions are on July 17 and 24. UNESCO-listed, iconic.

- 2026-07-24 — Tenjin Matsuri : Osaka’s great river festival — boat procession and fireworks over the Ōkawa river.
- 2026-07-25 — Sumidagawa Fireworks : Tokyo’s most famous fireworks (~20,000 shells). Arrive hours early or watch from a quieter bridge upstream. Yukata welcome.
- 2026-08-02 — Aomori Nebuta Matsuri : Enormous illuminated warrior floats parade at night with dancers (haneto) — anyone in costume can join the dancing.

- 2026-08-11 — Mountain Day : National public holiday (国民の祝日) — banks, city hall and most offices are closed.
- 2026-08-12 — Awa Odori : Japan’s largest dance festival — thousands of dancers fill the streets. “The dancing fool and the watching fool are equally foolish — so dance!”
- 2026-08-13 — Obon : Festival of ancestral spirits. Many return to hometowns (trains/roads packed — book early). Evening bon-odori dances on public squares are open to everyone — just join the circle.
- 2026-08-23 — Heat Recedes : One of the 24 solar terms (二十四節気). Shosho.
- 2026-08-29 — Kōenji Awa Odori : Tokyo’s huge Awa-Odori street dance — an easy way to see the Tokushima dance without leaving the city.
- 2026-09-01 — Nihyaku-tōka (210th day) : 210 days after Risshun — traditionally a day to watch for typhoons.
- 2026-09-08 — White Dew : One of the 24 solar terms (二十四節気). Hakuro.
- 2026-09-19 — Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri : Teams race massive wooden danjiri carts through the streets at full speed — thrilling and famously dangerous.
- 2026-09-20 — Autumn Higan : A week around the autumn equinox to honour ancestors.
- 2026-09-21 — Respect for the Aged Day : National public holiday (国民の祝日) — banks, city hall and most offices are closed.
- 2026-09-23 — Autumn Equinox : One of the 24 solar terms (二十四節気). Shūbun.
- 2026-09-25 — Tsukimi (moon viewing) : Admire the harvest moon with dango dumplings and susuki grass. Date follows the lunar calendar.

- 2026-10-22 — Jidai Matsuri : A grand costume procession through Kyoto tracing 1,000+ years of history.

- 2026-11-07 — Start of Winter : One of the 24 solar terms (二十四節気). Rittō.
- 2026-11-15 — Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3) : Children aged 3, 5 and 7 visit shrines in traditional dress to celebrate growth. Beautiful photo season.
- 2026-11-15 — Tori-no-Ichi (rake fairs) : November open-air fairs selling decorated bamboo rakes (kumade) for luck & business fortune.

- 2026-12-02 — Chichibu Night Festival : One of Japan’s three great float festivals — lantern-lit floats and winter fireworks on Dec 3. UNESCO-listed.

- 2026-12-22 — Winter Solstice : One of the 24 solar terms (二十四節気). Tōji.
- 2026-12-31 — Ōmisoka (New Year’s Eve) : Eat toshikoshi soba, hear temple bells ring 108 times (joya-no-kane), then the first shrine visit (hatsumōde) at midnight.
