Developer Salary Progression in Japan: Junior, Mid, Senior and Beyond (2026)
Real developer salary ranges in Japan for 2026 at every level — junior, mid, senior, staff — across foreign multinationals, Japanese tech, traditional SI, and startups. What actually moves the needle in your career.
The ladder, with real numbers
Most "average dev salary in Japan" articles smush every developer into one bucket. Real career progression looks different at a foreign-funded multinational vs a traditional Japanese SI shop vs a hot startup. Here is what each rung actually pays in 2026.
Junior (0-3 years)
| Employer type | Tokyo | Regional |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign multinational (Google, Mercari, PayPay) | ¥6M-8M | n/a |
| Japanese tech (Recruit, LINE, DeNA) | ¥4.8M-6M | ¥4M-5M |
| Traditional SI (NTT Data, Hitachi) | ¥3.8M-4.8M | ¥3.3M-4M |
| Startup with funding | ¥4.5M-6M + equity | ¥3.8M-4.5M |
| Small dev shop / SES | ¥3.5M-4.5M | ¥3M-4M |
Junior progression is mostly about leaving the SES/SI world fast. SES contractors are billed to clients at ¥600k-900k/month while paid ¥250k-350k. Two years of solid GitHub + a few side projects unlocks the next tier.
Mid (3-7 years)
This is where the gap widens sharply.
| Employer type | Tokyo | Regional |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign multinational | ¥10M-14M + RSU | n/a |
| Japanese tech | ¥7M-10M | ¥5.5M-7.5M |
| Traditional SI | ¥5M-7M | ¥4.5M-6.5M |
| Startup | ¥6M-9M + equity | ¥5M-7M |
Critical move: get an English-speaking team. Foreign-funded shops in Tokyo pay 50-80% more than traditional Japanese employers for the exact same React/Node/Python work. JLPT N2 helps; English fluency matters more.
Senior (7+ years)
| Employer type | Tokyo | Regional |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign multinational (IC4/L5) | ¥14M-20M + ¥3-6M RSU | n/a |
| Foreign multinational (staff/IC5) | ¥18M-28M + ¥5-12M RSU | n/a |
| Japanese tech | ¥10M-15M | ¥7M-11M |
| Traditional SI | ¥7M-10M | ¥6M-8.5M |
| Startup CTO/lead | ¥10M-15M + equity | ¥8M-12M |
At senior, the foreign vs Japanese gap is at its widest — sometimes 2x for identical work. The trade-off: foreign-funded jobs are intense, English-required, with periodic layoffs. Japanese jobs are stable, slower, often more local-Japanese-team-immersed.
Tech Lead / Staff / Manager (10+ years)
- Foreign IC track (Staff/Principal): ¥25M-40M + ¥10M-25M RSU. Reserved for top performers, often poached internationally.
- Foreign Engineering Manager: ¥22M-35M + ¥8M-15M RSU. People + delivery responsibility.
- Japanese big tech Manager: ¥13M-18M. Title bumps slower, base salary steadier.
- VC-backed startup CTO: ¥15M-25M base + meaningful equity. Risk-on.
What actually moves the needle
From the offers we've seen:
- English ability — single biggest multiplier. Foreign-funded ceilings only open if you can run a meeting in English.
- Distributed systems / ML / infra — pays more than CRUD. Even a basic Kubernetes background bumps ¥1-2M.
- Switching jobs every 3-4 years — internal raises max out at 3-5%/year. External moves typically jump 20-40%.
- Side projects / GitHub presence — Japanese hiring still leans on referrals and "vouchsafe" moments. A solid OSS contribution accelerates trust faster than another year of work history.
- JLPT N1 — only matters if you're targeting a Japanese-funded company that runs internal docs in Japanese. Otherwise N2 is plenty.
What take-home looks like at each rung
Quick reference using the take-home calculator, single, Tokyo, no dependents:
- ¥4.5M junior → ¥3.6M net (¥300k/mo)
- ¥8M mid → ¥6.1M net (¥508k/mo)
- ¥13M senior → ¥9.5M net (¥795k/mo)
- ¥20M staff → ¥13.6M net (¥1,133k/mo)
Add a spouse + 1 dependent to bump take-home by ~¥250-450k depending on bracket.
